The Great Barrier Reef
region stretches for over 2000 km along the coast of Queensland, from
just north of Fraser Island in the south (24'30'S) to beyond Cape York
in the north (10 degrees S).
An estimated 1500 species
of fish and more than 300 species of hard reef-building corals, 4000
mollusc species, and 400 species of sponge have been identified and the
numbers are still rising.
In 1983, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park had been
increased to 348 700 square kilometres, covering 98.5 per cent of the
Reef and making it the largest marine park in the world
